December 01 , 2004 Fuck The Independent Spirit Awards I want to like the Independent Spirit Awards. I really do. The problem is that they keep getting shit wrong. Their nominations were announced today. The good news is that Kinsey was nominated for a bunch.
The bad news is that Garden State and Napoleon Dynamite were more or less ignored.
I reviewed Garden State, but didn't review Naopleon Dynamite. That review is coming. The DVD comes out in a couple of weeks, and I've already begged for a copy of it from the good folks that handle the publicity for Fox Searchlight. Garden State wound up nominated for a couple of "First-time" awards only. This is wrong on so many levels, I don't know where to begin. It's in the running for my pick of best movie of the year. Zach Braff, Natalie Portman, and Peter Sarsgaard were ignored for acting awards, which is a friggin' travesty (Although Sarsgaard WAS nominated for "Kinsey") As for Naopleon Dynamite…almost nothing. Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) was nominated for supporting actor, but that's pretty much it (other than a special award for the producers). WHERE is Jon Heder (Napoleon)? WHERE is Aaron Ruell (Kip)? WHERE is Tina Majorino (Deb)?
Left: Gries, Heder, and Ruell. Right: Majorino and Heder Plus, another great indie - Twist - was shut out completely. I'm ever so pissed.
I haven't been this pissed off with the Independent Spirit Awards since "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" lost Best Feature back in '95.
